Week 23· by Chris
Review for week 23 - by Chris
Stealing a line from Alice Cooper, "Welcome to my Nightmare", welcome to week 23! This week we reviewed 9 wines, 8 of them white, and I suffered through all of them. The winers thought it would be funny to organize a 'white wine night' behind my back in honor of my birthday so I was the only person who showed up with a real wine. I hope you enjoy the reviews as much as I despised drinking the wines. In fairness though, I *am* in search of a white wine that I like, I just prefer to search at the rate of about 1 white per month.
The wines (9)
2005 Dr. Loosen — Riesling Germany
Original heading: “2005 Dr. Loosen - Riesling Germany”
The plot was revealed, standing on the table were 8 white wines. Dr. Loosen was the first stop on my freakish trip to wine hell. This wine garnered compliments like, 'light, crisp, sweet, fruity' ad nauseam. Bill went out on a ledge saying, "Those who like white wines like this one." I think they were all just giddy because they knew the suffering that was about to ensue. Regardless, this wine did receive 4 drink/buys, 1 drink/not buy by the winers so if you're looking to loosen up for about $10, this Riesling may be for you.

200? Voga — Pinot Grigio Italy
Original heading: “200? Voga - Pinot Grigio Italy”
Our second stop on this nightmarish trip was Voga Pinot Grigio. Steve brought this wine (big surprise), because it 'looked trendy' and he thinks he's representing some vast populace of wine buying sheep apparently, at least that's his justification for making us suffer bad wines... Steve himself said it had an isopropyl taste, I guess engineers know what that tastes like for some reason. Lots of adjectives for 'bad' were used to describe this wine, avoid it at all costs.

2002 Vernaccia Di San Gimignano — White Wine Italy
Original heading: “2002 Vernaccia Di San Gimignano - White Wine Italy”
A deceiving white wine, complex, peppery on the finish, Rich says, "an unusual grape." The winers agreed that this wine was not your typical white. Bill gives it "points for being distinctive", while I think it smells like Chianti. All in all a fairly well received white wine, and one of 2 bright spots for me in the evening. For $14 give this a try if you're in the mood for something different and chilled.

2003 Vitiano — Rose Umbria Italy
Original heading: “2003 Vitiano - Rose Umbria Italy”
A wannabe white wine that doesn't make the grade. Ssezi calls it, "quaffable", Ed says, "Bitter, repulsive." One of the shortest audio files of the evening, hence one of the shortest write-ups. The overall opinion on this is to spend your $9 elsewhere.

2004 Matanzas Creek — Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County
Original heading: “2004 Matanzas Creek - Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County”
Yeah, we're firmly back where we were earlier, in white wine hell, and still 3 more to drink! The winers didn't have anything positive to say about this wine. "Dry, sour, didn't like it, everything you don't like about a wine is in this wine" are some of what you'll hear on the audio. Bill says it's his, "least favorite of the night." You'd have more fun eating $15 worth of cough drops than enduring this wine.

2004 Le Droissy — Vouvray France
Original heading: “2004 Le Droissy - Vouvray France”
Ssezi starts this review by saying that since he was so short on his last review that he's earned some extra review time. He goes on to say that this wine was inspired by a Sr. class field trip (remember that one time in band camp?) and justifies his purchase of this wine to relive a bit of the glory days. In my opinion, wines that tasted good in high-school have no place on the Tuesday table, apparently I'm not alone as not a single winer besides Ssezi would buy this again for $12. A couple winers called it "sweet and sour", I called it "disgusting."

2004 Naia — Spain
Original heading: “2004 Naia - Spain”
This wine seems to be a love it or hate it wine. Everyone thought it had a grapefruit flavor, so if you like grapefruit, you might like this for $14. Really though, if you want grapefruit juice, buy grapefruit juice. At this point in the evening, I've tried 7 white wines, there's 1 left, then the red I brought, there's light at the end of the tunnel.

2004 White Truck — White Wine California
Original heading: “2004 White Truck - White Wine California”
8 minutes of audio, only 3 dedicated to the actual review of this wine. I think there's a collective sigh of relief when this one was opened, the last of the whites. Being the last didn't gain this wine any reprieve though, only one of us would drink it the rest of us voted no/no. Ed manages to plug Sonoma while voting no/no on this wine somehow, goes on to tell us about the museum and the actual red truck by the entrance. Blah blah blah, it's finally over and I can drink some red wine!

2004 Septima — Malbec Argentina
Original heading: “2004 Septima - Malbec Argentina”
This wine was eagerly received after having so many white wines. My review is a bit unrealistic, but certainly doesn't lack in enthusiasm. Everyone would drink this, but I was the only one giving it a drink/buy rating, and that certainly has to do with my leanings towards red wines after having 8, yes 8 whites. For $10 you can do better, but if you're following 8 white wines, just about any red will taste great :)
