Week 19· April 11, 2006· by John

Review for Tuesday - 04/11/2006 by John

Tasted by Bill, Chris, John, Rich, Ssezi, Steve.

Week 19 was our first shot at "unappreciated" wine region night. There was much debate as to what regions are unappreciated, how much different is Washington state from California and why don't we appreciate it, and whether or not we really don't appreciate South America in general. After drinking some of these wines we got a better idea of why we don't appreciate some regions, or maybe just the "North Fork of Long Island".

The first wine of the night was donated from Steve who not only tends to pick out metallic tastes in wine, he picks wines named after metallic bands...Steve describes this one as "Metallic" as if he was surprised. Most of us felt that this wine fell flat on the finish, and that it turned bitter and/or sour. Chris warns that it had a "funky" smell that could be a turnoff to some, but not to him since he got right past it...Good to know you don't mind the funk, Chris. Other characteristics of this wine included some berry on the nose and some oak and tannin on the taste. For 13 dollars, there were two of us who were willing to buy this wine again, and the rest would drink it if poured for them.

Coming in at 24 dollars, we didn't expect Steve to go all in on this wine from the start. Despite the price tag we all agreed that this wine was very pleasant and had a smoky flavor with hints of vanilla or chocolate. We started drinking this wine without food, and figured it would fare much better if we had some steak or other meat to drink it with. Although Steve found this wine to be "Extremely good" and that he "really enjoyed it" he was still unable to get over the price tag. Chris found this wine to be "delicious" and added that "every sip is like a bite of desert that you like". What if I don't like any desert? I suppose it doesn't matter because we all liked this wine, and only two of us would not buy it again.

Pindar Pythagoras — North Fork of Long Island - Red Table Wine Blend
Wine #3
-0.33 / 2.002 toilet

Pindar Pythagoras — North Fork of Long Island - Red Table Wine Blend

Original heading: “Pindar Pythagoras - North Fork of Long Island - Red Table Wine Blend

Sickly red in color with hints of toilet water on the palate. Foul and atrocious odor followed by melted lollipop berry. Drink now through April 20th 2006 at 11:37 PM and 24 seconds... In all seriousness, for 12 dollars there are much, MUCH better options than this wine. I'm convinced that they used sewer water to produce this wine as the water seemed tainted. Foul odors and trashy tastes surrounded this wine. According to Chris this wine is a perfect example of what tastes like ass, and you can listen to what he has to say about this wine to hear more. Once again, a "gimmicky" or "theme" wine doesn't quite do it for us. I have a theorem for you Pythagoras, if you make a gimmick wine it is likely to taste and/or smell atrocious. Two toilet bowl rating were earned by this wine, and nobody would drink it again.

2001 Bodega Lurton — Mendoza Reserve - Malbec

Anything would taste better than the last wine we had, but this wine was found to be much better. We felt this wine was very smooth and spicy, with a nice aroma and hints of berry. If that's not enough for you, it goes fine with cold French fries or antipasto according to Bill and Chris. This wine was very enjoyable, but it was likely the lack of character that made Ssezi and myself refrain from buying it. Steve on the other hand would not buy it for other reasons, and sorry to pick on you once again Steve, but you should hear him cringe at the 12 dollar price tag. Didn't you bring a wine that was more than 12 dollars Steve??? How can you then cringe at a price that is lower than what you paid for the wine you brought? I can imagine the scene at the liquor store when ringing up your purchases now...Anyways...We all liked this wine overall, but we were split down the middle with buying it, or simply drinking it. I suppose one half can buy it for the other half of us to drink.

2001 Casa De Santar — Portugal - DAO
Wine #5
1.00 / 2.00

2001 Casa De Santar — Portugal - DAO

Original heading: “2001 Casa De Santar - Portugal - DAO

Our final wine of the evening was from Portugal, which was not one of the "unappreciated" regions. I suppose that's true since Portugal isn't in South America, and we don't appreciate South America. We found this wine to be relatively smooth and pleasant but it had a bitter finish and/or aftertaste. Once again Chris detects trash on the nose and this time states that it was "hard to get past". Make up your darn mind Chris. Earlier you get right past the trash as if you enjoy it, and now you don't. The bitter edge got to most of us and along with the 19 dollar price tag, none of us were willing to buy it again. We all agreed to drink it if someone else were to shell out the 19 large for this wine.
