Review for Tuesday - 03/28/06 by Chris
Welcome to week 17. We are graced with the presence of Stefan this week, a rare grape indeed! We do more than just drink wines on Tuesday, we take time to nurture our fellow winers creative sides, giving constructive feedback as more beta testing on Bill's creation, "Bunker Down", the fast-paced war strategy game took place around the consumption of wine and chicken pot pies.
The wines (6)
2004 The Wolftrap — red blend - South Africa
Original heading: “2004 The Wolftrap - red blend - South Africa”
This hearty wine was received well by the winers, garnering complements such as "It's like eating a smoked sausage." And "it's got an old leather taste." We skipped the appetizers and chewed on The Wolftrap. I was particularly fond of this wine, and it's now a new favorite of mine, just edging out Panorroz Jumilla. Even Stef would drink/buy it. For $12 I don't think you'll make a mistake on this one as it was unanimously voted drink/buy.

2004 Frei Brothers — Chardonnay - Sonoma

While not run out on a rail, this wine didn't receive high praise either. Ssezi says, "It's what it claims to be." If that's not ambiguous enough, he goes on to call it, "smooth, buttery, not vanilla-ey." 2 of us would buy it and the rest of us enjoyed it with the chicken pot pie, but not enough to buy this $18 Chardonnay. The winers endeavor to find a white wine we all enjoy, and the journey continues.

2004 Ninth Island — Pinot Noir - Tasmania
Original heading: “2004 Ninth Island - Pinot Noir - Tasmania”
Total confusion, ratings from nearly hitting the toilet bowl to semi-enthusiastic drink/buys. The only thing the winers agreed on was that this wine tasted like grapefruit. I think I had the strongest (bad) reaction to this wine saying that it, "Tastes like hell." Stef liked it, but was a bit miffed that no grapefruit flavor was mentioned in it's description, that in fact it was described as silky and smooth, which obviously, grapefruit is not. I didn't hear the price of this beast, but in my opinion, it was too much.

Since 1868 Martinelli's (gold medal) — Sparkling Cider
Original heading: “Since 1868 Martinelli's (gold medal) - Sparkling Cider”
Release your inner child, pop a bottle of Martinelli's open and relive the time when you wanted to drink booze at the adult table and this is what you got instead. Bill claims you can't go wrong for $3 with this festive sparkling cider while John says you damn well can go wrong for $3 and would rather drink water. Reviews across the spectrum, the short of it is that you should really buy this for your kids and drink the real stuff yourself.

2002 Twin Beaks — Shiraz - Australia
Original heading: “2002 Twin Beaks - Shiraz - Australia”
Only one of us would buy this wine, the rest either didn't like it at all or thought it was nothing special in the $10 range. Steve had some harsh things to say, "stinky nose", "acidic", and my favorite, "there's no reason for it." Ed describes it as having paint thinner quality, but then said he'd drink it, I'll leave connecting the dots to you. Not very well received, it'd be best if you avoided this wine.

2003 Willm — Riesling - France
Original heading: “2003 Willm - Riesling - France”
Ed brought this tonight, maybe just to torture me, maybe because he likes white wines.. One thing is for sure, Ed thinks this wine is "female friendly" and thinks this will help "grease the skids" (wink wink). This Riesling was described as crisp, clean, dry, sweet, floral, and refreshing by its fans, and described hardly at all by its detractors. If you like Riesling's, you'll probably like this one for $12.
